Anti-cancer drugs can offer hope of an effective treatment for millions of cancer patients, but they also can carry the risk of side effects, particularly cardiac side effects. Testing for these side effects is essential, but it is a lengthy and expensive process, and pharmaceutical companies are eager to find ways to speed it up and reduce costs.

The Heart of the Matter

Since 1958, average life expectancy in the US has increased by 10 years. According to Igor Efimov, the inaugural chair of GW’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Alisann and Terry Collins Professor of Biomedical Engineering, the 68 percent reduction in the mortality rate from heart disease during the same period is a huge contributor to this remarkable gain in life expectancy.

BME Masters Student wins MIPS Award

Kristina Landino, a BME M.S. student, has won one of the Student Scholar Awards offered by the Medical Image Perception Society for attendance and presentation at its 17th biennial meeting this year. She will present a paper "Comparing salience detection algorithms applied to mammograms" in Houston in July.
